Piracy is a word which is a nightmare to publishers (books, audio, video and software). I am involving both in Internet & Software Industry as well as Media Industry. So I am really in pain about piracy. I am worried about the Audio and Video industry in Bangladesh. Before this write up I have talked over 20 audio/video publishers and producers to hear from them. All are really in pain. Piracy simply eating their profits and sometimes it is eating their own foods! Today I am going to share my ideas against piracy! I think this will be a great help to our aud/vid industry.
As we’ve industry of Audio and Video, so we’re talking about professionals who are involved here. We must save them. But how?
Here is some generic data:
1. Our audio industry releases thousands of Albums (DAT, CD, DVD) in a year. They publish this in traditional ways. For CDs they simply provide a jewel case with CD and a paper case with audio track info and CD. For 95% case this is the common practice.
2. And video industry (DVD/VCD) simply publish them in a jewel case.
My question is why people will buy this thing as they can download them from internet? Or even the pirate store they can have them with almost 3times cheaper than the original price. What is more they’ll have from the original publications?
-Answer: Nothing. But for Audio they can see the Lyric written into the Jewel Case.
So for this lyric consumer will buy them? –I don’t think so.
Study 1: Few days ago I went to Firm Gate (the huge hub traffic in Dhaka City and also the it has huge quantity of pirate stores for audio/video) and found one store in Footpath who was selling two MP3 CD for 20 taka (about 30cents). That was a great surprise for me. I didn’t know that it was that cheap! Even in my calculation the production cost is almost 20taka! I saw lots of people was buying it. More than 400songs for 20taka. Really cheap! And they don’t know even it is Piracy!
Study 2: Currently Bangladesh has a huge density of cell phone users. And most importantly this cell phone handset market is captured by some none branded Chinese products! Those phones are really cheap and has huge feature which is really amazing. And the bonus feature is: they have multimedia in all senses. So these sets are used as entertainment device. No one is buying a MM3 player nor a CD player now, they simply buy a phone. When they buy it, the shop simply upload lots of music/videos into the cell phone’s MMC. You can find this services even in root level of Bangladesh! Well, we’re in hi-tech! Really!
But still we’ve a industry and we’ve to save the professionals!
Time to shake hand with Fine Art People and Ad Agencies: Our industry is producing Audio-Videos in a generic way. There is no improvisation in packaging. What if they deliver the CD/DVDs in a way so that buyer think they’re purchasing a souvenir or with a value or even sometimes with very little amount of money! I believe that’ll work.
Innovation in Delivering: Ask the fine art guys to create something new for the CD/DVDs. Tell them to make the folder as sculpture so that the CD/DVDs can be delivered as a show-piece. So that consumer can also put that as a piece of art work!
Add Values: Embed some values with the packaging so that consumer can use that values to get more things. It can be a lottery or quiz contest, or a free ticket to an event. For those extra values grab some sponsor who will pay for their promotions. It is not a big deal!
Have Sponsors: Lots of promotional product or companies you’ll find around! Grab some of them to promote themselves with your CD/DVD product. So that you can have some fund to reduce the price.
If you combine my 3 ideas with your publications definitely you can sell more of your product. So fight against piracy is nothing but selling more. That’ll help to restore the industry and can give piece to the professionals in relevant industry.
i thnk it should b a social awareness…good Nirjhar 2 take ths matter seriously.and really liked the idea of making cd/dvd’s folder as an art work!!
Thanks! But if Audio/Video industry put 3 ideas together that will be great help. I want to make one example. I will do one marketing as my personal interest. Let me find out a publisher!
I think we can run a survey on the DVD/CD club/shop how many of them really know the term piracy! The number will definitely hurt us who actually care of the piracy.
Good Idea Sushanta!
But by the law and enforcement or even creating pressures is not the right solution.
Can you translate the write-up in Bangla and post it in http://www.amarblog.com? I think it will get more response in the bangla blogshere then 🙂
I’ll do that. It’ll take some time. Thanks!
3 suggestion should be:
1. Stop producing Hindi/English movie/audio song piracy and marketing at first (yes, those so good publishers do that back door business)
2. Concentrate to publish some really good music i.e Monpura (or even something that could be at least “listen”)
3. Start concert and let introduce artist all over small/big towns.
But, Oh, this is just wasting time to telling them those sort a “everyone knows but no-body listen” talks.
I’m done your request nirjhor, have a good time.
I’ll try to do it man! I am serious. Thanks for your valuable suggestions!
Thanks for your comment!
Excellent idea. I think ur idea will work more.
Thanks Ruhi! You’ve any thing new? If you’ve some ideas put those here.
Omar Osman’s suggestion is very good, shud b followed.
@Sushanta: Yes. Omar Osman is always creative in work!
We may be do the following steps:
– flourish the publication the news of CD/DVD not only like advetisement, but also like it will be created by a dedicated person of respective field.
– take open disscussion from expertiser and from vierws also about that CD/DVD.
Thank u to give attention this important matter.
Thanks Ruhi! Your point noted. I’ll raise these to the right authorities! Thanks again for your suggestions!
Very good idea!
Good idea. I appreciate the aware.
Nirjahr, I suggest about packaging creativity, but what about mp3 and mail version?
I have prepared another campaign for those. Here is the summary:
-In many countries selling audio track is a huge business. Example iTune Store, from where you can purchase track my 99cents. In the same way we can sell track for 1taka each.
-We can do some branding with mp3 release. For this purpose we can combine tracks with any promotional original mobile handset (you can find this example in India. They are releasing mobile set with the movie branding and almbum)
-We can provide MP3 services with other values like Proper lyric, Album artwork and Artist biography with a campaigning model.
I’ll write this thing in detail soon! May be tonight.
Thanks for your suggestion gias vai.
Pirace jindabad. Pairat copy use korar mojay alada.
ami apnar bipokkhe kichu likhi nai to. apni pirate copy use korun.. kono smossa nai. 🙂
I think Govt. should take drastic action against the pirates 🙂 IMO This could help it.
That’ll take more more more time. Don’t expect Gov. will do it.
u stink! piracy rules!
I am not against piracy either but I dont’ want to see our industry melt away! That was my point.
Our mentality has to be molded against piracy, otherwise we cant check it.
Let the pirates do their job. But the creative media people should do something better so that people can have the mentality to buy them. Otherwise they’ll be ruined.
idea guli valo
Thanks! Thanks! Any new ideas you’re having?
i think the main factor is the end user. if somehow they r biased or mentally strict not to use pirated copy …then the business will never flourish. And obviously there should be some strict law and monitoring by the concerned government agencies and law-n-forces team.
Lets try to change something man! Otherwise we’ll lose the industry!
First we have to build a mentality against piracy, otherwise we cant prevent it.
who is talking here prevent piracy? Did you read the article?
i think the idea..’add values’ is a good initiative… piracy is ethically wrong but economically wise… but if u provide smthng extra on buying a cd/dvd …it wiil be some help to tht….
nd………ehmm…eto kahinir poreo bolte chai….ami poisha die cd/dvd kenar che FREE DOWMLOAD e bisshashiii…..hahahaaha
Thanks for your valuable comments. I’ll appreciate if you write some more ideas here. That’ll be really helpful for us.
The ideas are nice. The publishers can go for some security in publishing as well. Like I have some DVDs brought from USA, from which you can’t copy directly to any other storage/disk. Those types of security will also reduce piracy rate I guess.
Thanks Robin! Thanks for the great information. I’ll push this to our publishers. Have a great day!
yah..piracy cannot be stopped by saying.. stop piracy, stop piracy…people will not buy the same thing with a high price…
So..reducing price by having some sponsors with some free (some times) gift/offer/…yes..people will probably buy.. at least the count will increase at least, no doubt… carry on//
Thanks for supporting me. I am really appreciating your thoughts! Thanks for being with me with this issue. I am really glad!
Thanks Irteja! How are you doing?
Nice topics….. Nirjhar…We should raise social wakefulness about that .
